ABS Specialist
Position Description
This position is accountable, as the coach for various levels of line management to develop improvement strategies, teach and help implement principles of the Alcoa Business System (which is based on the Toyota Production System approach to lean manufacturing). The individual will help facilitate the application of these principles within the assigned areas. This will include developing short and long term improvement strategies through Value Stream Mapping, deploying kaizen methodology, Total Productive Maintenance and Daily Management and Problem Solving, and other tools to remove waste from the process. The position will also be involved in developing current and target state drawings to reduce flow time of the product and overall inventories, while improving on time delivery performance.
Key competencies:
• Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills: Required to use excellent analytical and problem solving skills to facilitate problem resolution and assist management in identifying optimal solutions for the deployment of Alcoa Business System (ABS), including the development of a structured experiment plan related to inventory/flowpath management along with other Alcoa Business System (ABS) tools.
• Interpersonal Astuteness: The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization in terms of Alcoa Business System (ABS) concepts. It is critical that she/he be able to take principles that can be viewed as somewhat abstract, and effectively explain, teach, and implement those principles. In addition, the candidate must be able to persuade / influence diplomatically all levels of the organization in the area of system change through Alcoa Business System (ABS). Must be able to help coach the area leader(s) in developing an overall strategy and specific improvement experiments, through the use of the “Value-Stream-Map/A3” process.
• “Out of the Box” Thinking: Must be able to identify current paradigms that are barriers to sustainable change, and opportunities for multi-faceted system change (work content, material, information, flow). In addition, must be able to coach effectively others in “seeing” and eliminating waste through systemic changes that are sustained.
• Business/Technical Knowledge: Have knowledge of inventory management principles, particularly in flow design, store sizing, and data analysis in relation to flowpath management.
